We received a D for our seminar and I was slightly disappointed because I think we could have done a lot better as a group. However, based on everything that happened behind the scenes, I think a Distinction also demonstrates how we were eventually able to come together despite the hectic preparations. I was overall pleased with how the seminar turned out because I think we did the best that we could with what we had.
This group really went all out with their decorations, so even before stepping into the room I was internally moved by the amount of effort and detail they had gone to in order to create intrigue and excitement amongst the audience. Especially their theme! It was evident even in the green tinted lighting. Also, I could smell the pizza all the way from level one, so yeah, I was “reeled” in at once!
THEME and STAGING: Without a doubt, highly creative and appealing. They also made a really good pun out of their theme in relation to the actual topic, which I thought was super clever and entertaining. I just really liked the theme and thought it was totally relevant. The staging was top-notch, sound was perfect, and the guest speakers looked absolutely comfortable where they were. It was easy to walk in and out, as I suppose was with every other seminar as well, which is why I often find staging hard to talk about.
CONTENT and APPROACH: Each guest had a fair share of saying something, and what they offered the audience was really interesting and insightful. The questions that were asked provided a lot of in depth discussion and I felt that the guests had really good chemistry amongst each other. I also thought the hosts did excellent jobs at asking the right questions and getting really good answers from the speakers, and they also shared a really good connection with one another as well as the speakers. I felt that I was learning a lot about the media industry in this area of digitalisation, and it was extremely relevant to the audience who were mainly students.
Also I really liked the title of each segment and how it worked with their theme. I also really liked the visual presentation and transition between each slide!
PROMOTION: Like the previous group, the promotion was appropriate and timely. I really liked what they did with the posters and how they re-created The Matrix image to their advantage. They were very appealing in their Facebook posts and updates.
OVERALL MARK: HD
Of course, I believe this group deserves a HD for their commitment to providing a really well thought out seminar.
I was very impressed with this seminar from the moment I stepped into the room. From staging to decor, it seemed that everything was styled appropriately to the theme. They even wore costumes! I definitely saw a lot of effort and teamwork shining through this seminar. Furthermore, the guests were very thoughtful and sociable, and provided a lot of insight. I felt the atmosphere in general was very warm and inviting, so it was without a doubt my favourite seminar thus far.
THEME and STAGING: As I’ve already said, I was absolutely blown away by how the theme was incorporated into the staging and decorations. Though the focus was on international careers, I also felt that since something similar had been done in the previous years, it may have lacked originality in that sense as it was expected or hardly surprising to find ourselves, “of course, somewhere on a plane or at the airport.” That being said, perhaps they could have used boats or trains? On the contrary, flight is probably the most popular way of traveling overseas. But, to be sure, I was very happy with everything this group did in regards to their theme and staging.
CONTENT and APPROACH: For once, I felt that I was actually learning something useful and practical for the future. Not that the other seminars didn’t teach me anything, but I suppose since I want to work internationally, as someone who wants to work internationally I therefore gained a lot of necessary insight in regards to finances, experiences, language barriers, etc. The hosts also asked very good questions and rather than simply moving on from what the guests said, they continued from their discussions and delved deeper, which I thought was really refreshing as it took advantage of what the guests had to share.
PROMOTION: Their promotion was very timely and appropriate. The trailer was well executed, the posters were appealing and simple, and the Facebook posts were fun to read. The group seemed very on top of things and well organised.
OVERALL MARK: HD
Once again, I’ve given this group a HD because they really showed how much time and effort was spent in putting the seminar together. It was a huge success!
To top everything off, this week I have sent photos, signed release forms, and roles and responsibilities to the steering committee and have shared them on Google Drive. Now the seminar business is officially over, except I plan on writing one last post about it! Until then, this is what I will be feeling for the many years to come…
Reflecting on my seminar, I must admit there were a few disappointments here and there, but overall, I am very pleased with how things turned out. Perhaps that is due to my having profoundly low expectations.
